On not being very observant

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

I’ve been doing some work with a startup company, highbrew technologies. Our latest venture is for a paper company in west chester. My friend Jacob had told me the name of this company several times, but when we went to visit and talk with our client on friday, I realized for the first time that this place is right across the street from one of the AtriCure Offices.

The man we talked to was impressed and even tried to hire me :) . I still don’t know If I want to work during the school year next year or not. Right now I don’t even feel like finishing the math major because it’ll be a lot of work, and some of the classes I’d be taking would just be uninteresting. I wish I’d gotten a start on this earlier…

Another Song

I made it fresh tonight. It is called ‘Los Alamos‘ because I was offered a job there today, and I think the place sounds pretty cool.

I need to get better at naming my songs…

Good News

I was a little nervous about how I was going to pay for my school next year. I have an amalgamation of scholarships that just about cover tuition, but I plan to finally move out of my house next year and I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to afford that. I talked with people in financial aid about a loan yesterday. Today there was a note on the board in the physics lounge for me to see Dr. Herbert. He informed me that I have been awarded some sort of ‘outstanding senior’ scholarship for physics, to the tune of $4,000, applicable to room and board. That’s enough for me to pay rent for the year!

Yesterday, I rode a motorcycle. It was an awesome experience. I rode with my friend jacob to get lunch, and I aboslutely loved it. I want to get one now.

I love Nerd Humor

Found on slashdot:

Nerd1:
Just remember….you were a n00b yourself once…

Speak for yourself. After my mother re-partitioned her drive and mounted the smaller one at “/womb” I was compiled from source.

Nerd 2:
Half the stuff mounted there was foreign binaries that she could have got from anywhere.

Happy Easter

I made a new song today.

I would say that I ‘wrote’ it except that there was no writing involved. So I just say that I made it.

I am the Man

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

I have just completed my proof of LaGrange’s theorem! The preceding chapter in the book dealt with these things called ‘cosets’, and I wasn’t really too certain about them or why they mattered, and then I realized while I was constructing my proof, I was using cosets without realizing that’s what they were. That’s so sweet.

I dig it.

Screw Linux!

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

I was having fun trying to get my programs to work under linux untill I realized that the things that I coudln’t get working were just not going to work. Among the various things I was struggling with was trying to get my mouse to work properly. I am used to a mouse with buttons on the left and right side that you can use to go ‘back’ or ‘forward’ in firefox or explorer or what have you. For some reason, in Linux, they were configured to ‘copy’ (instead of ‘back’) and ‘right click’ instead of ‘forward.’ The Ubuntu user forums were pretty helpful in explaining what I had to do: Edit some file in /etc/X11/ and then restart the X Windows system. I tried that, and when I restarted it didn’t work and was giving me a text only mode. I had no idea how to fix this; I realized that I probably should have backed up whatever file it was that I had edited, but at this point I was fed up with trying to get all of this stupid crap working in linux. The finance program couldn’t read my Quicken data files, the ipod-interface program would not use aac files, and the music player program wouldn’t play mp3’s.

I don’t want to fight my computer. I just want to use the damn thing. I can see why linux enthusiasts like the operating system, and if i had grown up using it maybe i’d stick with it or something, but windows really works pretty much just fine for me.

Hooray for Linux!

I am setting up Linux on my machine right now. Specifically, Ubuntu on the advice of good old defunkt. I dig it. I’m having a fun time getting everything to work, and I’ve learned a heck of a lot.

Also, apparently my post on video games and education was quoted on another blog! Awesome.

Hooray for Free Upgrades

I was going to do some IT consulting for a friend’s uncle, and the first thing he had me do was take care of this server that wasn’t working. I got the problem down to a bad motherboard, and when I asked him how he wanted me to take care of it, he never got back to me. I had this server sitting in my room for months, when in february I decided to ask him again and the email bounced – turns out the company went under. I had to replace my own motherboard at the time, so I figured I’d put my old one in that machine and see what happened; it didn’t work because the power supplies were different.

Today I went over to microcenter and bought myself a power adapater, and put the two hard drives as well as the memory from the server into my machine. My computer now has an Athlon 64 3500+ Processor with 2GB of Ram and 330 GB hard drive space.

And it only cost me $7 for the cable :)
