Khalid,

My favorite word, algorithm, is also derived from Arabic. My boss at work is a Muslim and I have nothing but respect for him. I certainly don't paint all Muslims with the same brush, but I do think the faith needs to undergo a reformation the way Christianity did, in order to be more viable in the modern world. I certainly understand your dislike of the US foreign policy, but it really is a complicated situation. I wrote this blog post as a sort of 'mind dump' and i was surprised to get any real feedback from it. Thanks for your point of view.

Hi, I respect your opinion and as a Muslim , I really feel so hurt that many americans view Islam in such a negative way. I think the image of Islam and muslims are so distorted in the west because of acts of some "muslims" and the coverage of the western media. I have never been to the US in my life but I know your media. I live in Oman in the middleast and I have had CNN since I was a little kid(I'm in my late twenties). Fox news, Cartoon Network and many others can be recieved here. Even arabic channels air American series, sitcoms, news and other programs like Oprah and even Dr. Phil. My point is that whenever anything to be broadcasted about us, there will be a 99% that what it will be mostly the appalling. You will not see reports about great things in this area. How many americans know that Muslims contributed in the developement of science, that words like Algebra and Alcohol comes from Arabic.
Even the examples like the story about the raped girl caused rage among muslims becuase it is not part of Shari'ah (the islamic law) to perscute the victims and therefore she wasn't persecuted but you will only hear about such stories, you won't hear about the Saudi female vice minister. That the largest muslim country in terms of population (Indonesia) had a female president. Pakistan had a female prime minister and so did Bangladesh.
One more thing , the US foriegn policy is hated here because of its support to dictators like Mubarak the president of Egypt and for double standards especially with Israel.( We don't hate jews , as a muslim it is part of my faith respect Moses, also there are jews living in predomenently muslim states till this moment i.e Iran, Morroco, Tunesia and Yemen but we hate Israel for its occupation).
Anyways, I only hope for the peace in the world and that all the world will get to know the real Islam and respect it for what it is.
Regards from Oman

Tim, You're probably right. It was late when I wrote that and i' was thinking about a story of a girl who was killed by Islamic extremists for comitting 'adultery' after she'd been raped. This list wasnt' mean to be an all encompassing list of things I believe for certain, it was more of a mental core dump.

I think that the onus rests now with champions of freedom and democracy to explain why Islam is so incompatible. I think that Muslim Americans are a striking example of Islam's ability to mix in a democratic system. Remember that Islam has become radicalized in many regards due to our meddling in Islamic society's attempts around the globe to create a democratic political system. I dont completely disagree with your claim, but I think that our premise might be different

Oh, one more highlight: "I believe the world was created by a phenomenally intelligent entity, as an act of supreme love." Yes! And boy, does that seem like an unpopular thing to say, these days.

Dude, nice credo. There's some good stuff here. I don't agree with all of it, but there are some really wise things in here.

If I may highlight one... This has been of interest to me lately. "I believe Islam is fundamentally incompatible with a Free, Democratic society." I agree, and I think it's about time to say so. Just yesterday, a friend of mine said, in essence, "We can't be afraid to condemn things that harm the human condition." I told him of a quote I once heard, "Tolerance of intolerance is intolerance."

You might enjoy reading the article from which I got the quote:

(Though wait until you have an hour to spare before starting...)

Thanks for the thought-provoking post.
